Hi Jan Chris – fangen wir mit dem quasi Comeback Album „La Muerte“ an, wie waren die Reaktionen auf die CD?
Die Reaktionen? Die waren gut, hauptsächlich gut. Natürlich war eine gewisse Skepsis vorhanden, wir wussten auch nicht, ob die Leute das Album mögen werden, so in etwa wie bei „Soulk Survivor“. Aber schlussendlich waren die Reaktionen relativ gut, obwohl wir doch größere Probleme hatten eine Club Tour auf die Beine zu stellen, zumindest diverse Festivalauftritte haben wir dann letzten Sommer doch hinbekommen. Wir hatten dabei meist Spots so um drei Uhr am Nachmittag, mussten vor Bands wie z.B. MORBID ANGEL spielen, aber die Fanreaktionen auf die „La Muerte“ Songs war genauso wie bei den alten Stücken, darum glaube ich, dass wir ein sehr gutes Comeback Album hingebracht haben.
„Rise to Ruin“ wahrscheinlich das schnellste und härteste GOREFEST Album, wenn ich da an Songs wie „Revolt“ oder “The War On Stupidity” denke…
Oh Absolutely! Wobei Du musst bedenken bei „La Muerte“ war die Band zwar gut, aber ein wenig fragil. Es waren doch sieben Jahres seitdem wir zum Letzten Mal im Studio waren, wir haben auch viele Gespräche miteinander geführt um den „old bullshit“ von damals loszuwerden, es war schon irgendwie so ein Test für uns alle. Aber ich kann Dir voll und ganz zustimmen, es war zu diesem Zeitpunkt das Beste was wir tun konnten. Als wir mit dem Songwriting des neuen Albums begannen, hatten wir schon einige Shows zusammen gespielt, unser Verhältnis zueinander ist um ein vielfaches besser geworden, sodass wir darüber gar nicht mehr nachdenken müssen, sondern uns voll und ganz auf die Musik konzentrieren können. Der größte Vorteil des neuen Albums ist sicher auch, dass es mehr als Einheit dasteht, als dies noch bei „La Muerte“ der Fall war. Das hängt damit zusammen, dass Frank (Harthoorn – Guitar) diesmal keinen einzigen Song geschrieben hat. Er hat sogar in einem Interview vor ein paar Tagen selbst gesagt, dass das neue Album deswegen besser ist, weil er keinen Song dafür beigesteuert hat Ha Ha Ha Ha. Das macht das Album mehr zu einer Einheit – ich meine, da steckt gewaltig viel Arbeit von Frank drinnen, aber er nahm halt nicht am Songwriting teil. Wobei wem interessiert das überhaupt – es hat keine Auswirkungen auf seinen Status innerhalb von GOREFEST. Es werden auf dem ltd. Edition Digipack auch zwei Bonussongs draufsein, und zwar “Dehumanization”uand “Surrealism” und wir haben die deswegen nicht auf das reguläre Album gepackt, nicht weil sie keine guten Songs sind, das sind sie, sondern weil sie doch ein wenig anders sind. Wir hatten irgendwie das Gefühl wir sollten dieses neun Songs, fünfzig Minuten Album machen, welches von Anfang bis Ende „great“ ist – und ich glaube, dass ist uns gelungen (Oh Ja, das ist es – Reini)
Ich hab in einem Artikel gelesen, dass ihr für „Rise to Ruin“ kein einziges Mal miteinander geprobt habt, weil ihr vier verstreut über Holland wohnt. Hat da jeder seine Parts erledigt und ihr hab das dann übers Internet ausgetauscht, oder wir hat das funktioniert?
Ja genauso!
Wir haben im Juli 2006 begonnen Material zu schreiben. Wir hatten dieses dämmliche Home Studio Programm und ich hab es wirklich gehasst, weil es immer Verzögerungen zwischen den Teilen die Du hörst und jenen die Du aufgenommen hast, produzierte. Darum ging ich in den nächsten Musicshop und hab mir Pro Tools gekauft, das hat nur ca. 500 Euro gekostet. Ich hab’s damit doch tatsächlich geschafft, meine Vocals innerhalb von vier Stunden nach Aufreißen der Verpackung aufzunehmen. Alle Anderen – außer Frank, der mit Technik nichts am Hut hat – haben ihr Material auch zu Hause geschrieben und wir haben das dann gegenseitig ausgetauscht. Meistens kam innerhalb von 15 Minuten auch schon die Antwort, und dadurch genossen wir es zu Hause arbeiten zu können, und hatten binnen kurzer Zeit die Antworten wie das Material so ankommt. Wir haben ja alle noch unsere Jobs und GOREFEST werden nie mehr unser Full Time Job sein. Dadurch war es für uns ganz einfach das Album so aufzunehmen.
Was sagst Du zu folgendem Satz: Am achten Tag erschuf Gott die lebende Drummaschine und gab ihr den Namen Ed Warby.

Yeah! Well it’s true!
Was so cool an Edy is, wenn er einmal einen Fehler macht, normalerweise macht er ja sowieso keine, aber irgendwann überspielt er das einfach. Er ist unglaublich tight, aber er hat auch den Groove. Was bedeutet, er versteht es das Tempo herauszunehmen. Hey wir haben einfach einen Fucking guten Drummer. Es gibt sicher viele, die schneller spielen können, aber Edy hits hard! Viele werden es nicht glauben, aber auf dem Album ist definitiv kein Triggering gemacht worden. Auf „La Muerte“ waren die Bassdrum und die Snare gesampelt. Aber für dieses Album kam Tue (Madsen – Producer) ins Studio nach Holland und er hat es geschafft, die Drums ohne Hilfsmittel aufzunehmen. Das ist 100% pures Drumming was man da hört. Und genau das liebe ich an Ed Warby so. Er ist ein unglaublicher Drummer und ich schätze mich glücklich mit ihm in einer Band zu sein.
Ihr habt das 1. Mal mit Tue Madsen zusammengearbeitet – und er hat einen außergewöhnlichen Job hingelegt, ich glaube ihr seid auch sehr zufrieden mit dem Sound oder?
Ja natürlich. Das Album is Digital von vorne bis hinten. Es wurde aufgenommen und gemixed mit Pro Tools, ich bin mir sicher das ist kein Inch an analogem Sound auf dem Album. Aber es klingt ein wenig wie eine analoge Aufnahme, aber das hat wohl auch mit uns zu tun. Wir haben ja mittlerweile sieben Studioalben und was weiß ich wie viele Demo Tracks gemacht, wir sind eine tighte Band, wollen dabei aber keineswegs steril klingen. Das coole an Tue ist, als wir ihm die Tapes gaben, haben wir ihm gebeten diese Noisy Parts rauszufiltern, die zwischen den einzelnen Sektionen zu hören sind. Er meinte nur said “no fucking way leave em on there, leave em on there”. Ich glaub einfach, die Kombination GOREFEST und Tue Madsen war eine richtig gute Kombination.
Die einzig leisen Kritikpunkt am neuen Album hab ich bezüglich des Coverartworks. Ok ihr habt mit Rob "Mid" Middleton gearbeitet (der auch die “False” und “La Muerte” Alben, sowie sehr oft für Napalm Death gearbeitet hat), aber irgendwie schaut dieses Clown ähnliche irgendwas reichlich deplatziert aus.
Du bist nicht der Erste, dem dies auffällt. Wir mögen es und das ist ja schließlich was zählt. Wir wollten unbedingt eine Zeichnung haben und keine digitales Bild, was derzeit ja 99% der Cover haben. Robert ist dann mit diesem Hoffnarren dahergekommen und was soll ich sagen, ich mag es! Es ist ja nur ein Cover verstehst Du. Diese Diskussionen gibt es immer, auch über unser altes Logo – what the heck, das war damals und Heute ist Heute!
Lass uns über ein paar Songs von „RtR“ sprechen – der Opener mit seinen Newsartigen Spoken Words Part – ist da eine Message hinterlegt?
Es ist ein News Flash aus der Zukunft. Als die Menschheit von einer Gruppen von Leuten, die an der Macht saßen, ausgenommen wurde. Wollen wir hoffen, dass dies nur die News der Zukunft sind…
Ist eigentlich “Babylon’s Whore” der längste GOREFEST Track ever??
Hmm oder „La Muerte“ der Instrumental Track, ich weiß nicht genau. Der Song wurde komplett von Boudewijn geschrieben und war im Original sogar noch länger, so rund 11 Minuten lang. Er meinte ich hab da einen Song, wo ich genau weiß, ihr werdet ihn nicht mögen. Wir antworteten, hey come on, steck ihn in den player und lass uns entscheiden ob wir ihn mögen oder nicht. Wir wussten was er damit machen wollte, es war eine Kombination aus insgesamt drei Stücken, wir befanden ihn lediglich ein wenig zu lang, so hat Boudewijn ihn überarbeitet, und er klingt definitiv nicht nach einem 10 Minuten langen Stück.
Ihr werdet ja mit One Man Army auf Europa Tournee gehen, auch zwei Dates in A sind dabei. Letztes Mal habt ihr ja bei den X-Mas Festivals eher Pech gehabt mit der Absage, ich bin mir sicher, ihr seid extrem happy to be back on track.
Ja sind wir. Wir werden mit One Man Army und Before the Fall spielen.
Before the Fall?? Hmmm, wusste ich bis jetzt noch gar nicht, Hey das sind ja unsere Österreicher…
Ha Ha Ha - Ja das sind sie. Die werden den Opener machen und One Man Army sind Special Guest. Wir werden nur eine Backline mitnehmen und sind uns bewusst, dass dies eine Clubtour ist, darum gibt es auch nur die GOREFEST Backline, wir wollen unsere Support Bands nicht benachteiligen.

Wir haben die ja auch erst seit Mai 2007, derzeit haben wir noch nicht so viele Friends dort, aber wir arbeiten daran.
Fiel Sharing – uns hat es bei „La Muerte“ extrem geholflen. Und Metalfans sind ja Sammler, darum wollen die meisten ja auch das Original Album habne. OK die laden es sich runter, sobald es irgendwo verfügbar ist, aber sie kommen zu den Live Shows und sie kaufen T-Shirts. Aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht ist es nicht ganz so schlimm, aber wir müssen schon daran erinnern, dass wenn die Leute aufhören für Musik zu zahlen, die Musikindustrie in die Knie gehen wird, oder gleich dicht machen muss.
Also ich wäre jetzt fertig, und ich werde wirklich probieren, dass ich im Oktober bei Eurem Auftritt in Wien dabei sein kann.
Danke Dir, aber jetzt hab ich eine Frage an Dich, die ich jedem Journalisten stelle. Wie waren die Reaktionen über unser neues Album bis jetzt, von Leuten die es sich bereits downgeloaded haben oder denen es Du vorgespielt hast?
Also die Reaktionen in Österr. Metalforen, das Album steht natürlich schon im Netz….
Natürlich tut es das, ich hab das schon einige Stunden vorher im Netz gefunden, bevor ich meine Promo CD bekommen hab.
Also die Meinung ist generell die, dass die meisten sehr zufrieden sind, das „Rise to Ruin“ wieder härter und auch schneller als „La Muerte „ ausgefallen ist, die meisten Leute mögen das neue Album.
Hey Cool! Freut mich zu hören. Alles was ich Dir noch mitgeben kann ist, dass wir on Tour eine wirklich harte Mixtur aush „False“, „Mindloss“, natürlich den letzten beiden Alben und warhscheinlich auch “Demon Seed” von Soul Survivor bringen werdne, es wird einen 90-minütige Show und hoffentlich werden zahlreiche Leute erscheinen.

Hi Jan Chris let’s start with the – lets call it – comeback Album “La Muerte” how were the reactions?
The Reaction?? It was good. Overall good. I mean there was a little bit of scepticism of course, cause we were sure not all people would like the album – a little bit like “soul survivor”. But in the End the reactions were quit good, never the less we had some big problems with the club tours, but we still managed to book some festivals last summer. And we had spots around three o’clock in the afternoon, were forced to play before MORBID ANGEL, but the reaction for the “La Muerte” Songs were equally to those of the old Songs, so I guess we did it a very good Comeback Album.
“Rise to Ruin” – probably your fastest and heaviest album so far – when I hear Songs like “Revolt” and “The War On Stupidity” for instance…
Oh Absolutely. But you have to Understand, with “La Muerte” the Band was really good, but also a bit fragiled. It has been seven years were we have been in the Studio the last time and we were talking a lot with each other and get rid of the old bullshit, it was a little bit like testing each other. But I can fully agree with you it was the best Album at that time! When we started writing this Album we already did a few gigs together, our relationship is so much better right now, that we don’t have to think about our relationship and we can focus on the music. The main Advantage of the new Album is that it is a unity – a bit more – than “La Muerte”. That has also to do with the fact that Frank (Harthoorn – Guitar) didn’t write any songs on the album. He did an Interview a couple of days ago and said, he thinks the new album is better, because there is not a single song from him on the album!! Ha Ha Ha Ha! That makes the Album more of a Unity. I mean there is a lot of work of him on the album, but he wasn’t part of the song writing. But hey who cares, it doesn’t affect his position in GOREFEST. There will be also two Bonus Songs on the ltd. Edition Digipack Version, they are called “Dehumanization” and “Surrealism” and why did we not include them on the Album, not because they are not good songs, they are, but they are different. And we feel to make this nine Songs, fifty Minute Album that is a great Album from Start to Finish – and I think we succeeded. (Yes you did!! – Reini)
I found an Article where u said that u haven’t rehearsed for this album a single time – cause u four are living all over Holland – so everyone made his parts and u changed them over the internet or how does this work?
Yeah absolutely! We finally started writing material at home somewhere in July 2006. We had this shitty programm Home Studio and I fuckin hate it, cause it always makes delays between the section you hear and those you recorded. So I went to the music shop and bought the Pro Tools Programm and It only costs 500 Euros. I managed to record my Vocals in four hours time from opening the package. And all others – except Frank who don’t wanna do anything technical – write material at home and we converted into mp3 and send it to the others. Mostly we did the reply in about 15 minutes and so we loved to spend time at home on one hand and on the other hand we had the response from the others how the material works. We still have our jobs, and GOREFEST will never ever be our full time job. So it was easy for us to record it this way.
What do you say to the sentence: On the 8th day god created the human drum machine and he gave it the name Ed Warby!!

Yeah! Well it’s true!
What cool is about Edy if he makes a mistake, well he doesn’t make any mistakes. But every now and then he can drum around the beat. He is friggin tight, but he can also groove. What means he is able to slow down a little bit, and hey we have a great fucking drummer. There are lots of faster drummers, but he hits hard! For a lot of people it is hard to understand that on the album there is no triggering involved. On “La Muerte” the Bassdrum and the Snare had a Sample on it. But for this Album Tue (Madsen – Producer) came to the Studio in Holland and he managed to make the drums without any sound enforcements. It’s 100% pure Drumming that you hear. That’s what I love about Ed Warby. He is a real fucking Drummer and I am just lucky to be in a Band with him.
You hired for the 1st time (I guess) Tue Madsen for doing the Mix on “Rise to Ruin” – and hell he did a tremendous job…so I guess you are really satisfied with the sound.
Yeah Yeah Yeah! This Album is as Digital as it can get. It was recorded and mixed with Pro Tools am sure there is not an inch of analog impression involved. But It sounds kindda analog which has also to do with us – we already did seven studio albums and god how many demo tracks, we are a tight band, but we don’t want to sound sterile. I Think what about the great things about Tue is – when we gave him the Tapes we asked him if he can clean out the noisy tracks between the sections. And he said “no fucking way leave em on there, leave em on there”. I think the combination Tue Madsen and GOREFEST is a really good combination.
The only critics on “Rise to Ruin” is the Coverartwork: OK you worked with Rob "Mid" Middleton (who did the “False” and “La Muerte” Album, and a lot of Napalm Death) but this clowny thing looks kinda misplaced.
Well you are not the only one. But we like it and that what’s matters. What we wanted was a real painting and not a digital image which 99% of all the Artworks have nowadays. Robert came than with this jester and what shall I say, I love it. It just a Cover you know. There is always this discussion – also about the old logo – what the heck, that was than and this is now.
Let’s talk about some Songs on “RtR” - The Opener “Revolt” with this kindda News Spoken Words – is there a Message behind it.
It’s a news flash from the future. When humanity was raped by a group of people in charge and things like that .. let’s hope it is only the news future.
Is “Babylon’s Whore” the longest Track u ever released?
Oh either “La Muerte” the Instrumental Track or this one. This Song was completely written by Boudewijn and in original it was a little longer about eleven minutes. He said I have a Song there and I am sure you won’t like it. We said, hey come on stick it in the Cd player and let us decide if we like it or not. We knew what he wanted to do with this one.. it was a combination of original three songs, we founded it a bit too long, so Boudewijn made some correction. And it doesn’t sound like a ten minutes song.
You will go on European Tour with OMAATUQ – with also two Austrian Dates! Last Time the X-Mas didn’t come up, so am sure you are really happy to be back on track.
Yeah we are. We will play with One Man Army and Before the Fall.
Before the Fall – hmm I didn’t know that – hey they are Austrian!
Ha Ha Ha - Yes they are. They will open, One Man Army are Special Guest, there will be only one Backline and we are realistic that this is a Club Show Tour, that’s why there is only the GOREFEST Backline, and we don’t wanna piss off our Support Bands.

Well we still have it about May 2007 – so we actually have too much friends, but we working on it.
File Sharing – well it helps us for “La Muerte” a lot. And Metalfans are Collectors, so they do wanna have the real Album. Ok they download the Album when its available, but they do come to live-shows and they do buy the t-shirts. For economical reasons it is not that bad, but we have to keep in mind, when people stop buying music the whole industry will go down or even close down.
So I am finished, and I really will try to manage to be in Vienna in October to see you live.

Well the reaction in several Austrian Forums – the album is already available in all file sharing platforms.
Of course it is, I found it on one a couple of hours before I got my promo-cd!!
The opinion right now is that most of the people are very glad that “Rise to Ruin” is harder and faster than “La Muerte” and most of the people really do like this new Album.
Hey Cool – Glad to hear that. All I can say now is that we will do on our Tour a really hard mixture with Songs from “False”, “Mindloss”, of course the last two Albums, and we probably will also do “Demon Seed” from Soul Survivor, so it will be a 90 Minutes Show and hopefully a lot of people will be there!
