Der gefeierte Rock/Metal-Gitarrist Jim Matheos (FATES WARNING, ARCH, MATHEOS) hat sich mit der Rockröhre Steve Overland (FM) zusammengetan und die Band KINGS OF MERCIA gegründet. Jim Matheos äußerte sich wie folgt zu dem Song: ""Wrecking Ball" war der erste Song, den ich für das spätere "Kings Of Mercia" geschrieben habe, und er ist auch der Eröffnungssong des Albums. Ich hatte keine klare Vorstellung davon, was ich musikalisch machen wollte, aber dieser Song entstand sehr schnell und natürlich, ohne dass ich viel darüber nachdachte. Die Kombination aus einfachen, aber schweren Riffs und Steves kraftvollem Gesang gibt den Ton und die Stimmung für den Rest des Albums vor."

Jim Matheos ist vor allem als Gründungsgitarrist von FATES WARNING bekannt, hat aber auch unzählige andere Projekte auf dem Buckel - darunter ARCH / MATHEOS und zuletzt TUESDAY THE SKY - und ist nicht in der Lage, seine Kreativität zu bändigen. Anfang 2021 begann er mit der Arbeit an den Songs, die das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum von KINGS OF MERCIA werden sollten, wobei er seinen unverwechselbaren Stil beibehielt und doch etwas anders machte. "Ich begann zu schreiben, ohne eine wirkliche Vorstellung davon zu haben, in welche Richtung ich gehen wollte oder was ich mit dem Material machen wollte. Die ersten paar Songs kamen schnell zusammen und waren etwas geradliniger, als ich es gewohnt bin, und ich mochte diese Idee sehr, eine Art Rückkehr zu meinen frühen Heavy/Hardrock-Wurzeln. Es hat sicherlich geholfen, dass wir zumindest zu Beginn keine vorgefertigten Vorstellungen davon hatten, wie das Album klingen sollte oder würde, ebenso wie die Tatsache, dass es unser erstes Album ist, so dass es nichts gab, woran wir es messen konnten, und auch keine Erwartungen, denen wir gerecht werden mussten, wenn auch nur in meinem eigenen Kopf".

Matheos' nächste Sorge galt der Suche nach Musikern, die ihm bei der Umsetzung des Materials helfen sollten, und seine erste Priorität war ein Sänger. Es war sein Freund Jeff Wagner, der Steve Overland von FM vorschlug, und ein anderer Freund, Rockjournalist Dave Ling, der sie miteinander in Kontakt brachte. "Jim hatte Dave um meine Kontaktdaten gebeten, wir sprachen über seine Idee, die beiden Stile zu mischen, seinen härteren Hintergrund mit meiner melodischeren/bluesigeren Richtung", sagt Overland. "Wir beschlossen, eine Zusammenarbeit an einem Song zu versuchen und zu sehen, wie es funktioniert, wir kamen auf den Track "Humankind", und wir beide liebten ihn." Nachdem sich Matheos bereits auf diese Hardrock-Richtung festgelegt hatte, wurde erst, als er die ersten paar Songs von Overland zurückbekam, ganz klar, welche Form die Platte annehmen würde, wobei der Sänger alle paar Wochen seine Parts schickte und alles allmählich zusammenkam.

Hinter dem Schlagzeug sitzt der legendäre Simon Phillips (ex-TOTO, DEREK SHERINIAN), einer von Matheos' Lieblingsschlagzeugern. "Ich beschloss, ihn aus einer Laune heraus zu kontaktieren, ohne wirklich zu erwarten, dass er verfügbar oder an diesem Projekt interessiert sein würde. Aber zu meiner Überraschung gefiel ihm die Musik und er war in der Lage, einige Aufnahmen in seinen Zeitplan zu integrieren. Es ist mir eine Ehre, die Credits mit ihm zu teilen, und ich könnte nicht glücklicher sein mit dem, was er zu dem Album beigetragen hat." Abgerundet wird die Gruppe durch den Bassisten Joey Vera - Matheos' Bandkollege bei FATES WARNING - der seinen typischen Stil und seine Professionalität einbringt. "Mein alter Freund und Arbeitskollege Joey Vera war eine natürliche Wahl für den Bass. Ich wusste nicht nur, dass er seine Leistung bringen würde, sondern es war auch schön, ein vertrautes Gesicht unter den neuen Persönlichkeiten zu haben." Mit diesen Musikern war es ein einfacher, stressfreier Prozess, Musik aus Liebe zur Sache zu machen und etwas zu schaffen, das vertraut und doch neu klingt und das Repertoire aller Beteiligten erweitert. Das bedeutet, dass Songs wie die halb akustische Ballade "Too Far Gone" oder das wunderschöne "Everyday Angels" und das mitreißende "Wrecking Ball", das die Platte auf einem Höhepunkt eröffnet, alle in einem dynamischen Stil zum Leben erweckt werden.

Jim Matheos had this to say about the song: ""Wrecking Ball" was the first song I wrote for what would become Kings of Mercia, it's also the opening track on the album. I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to do musically but this one came together very quickly and naturally without too much forethought. The combination of simple but heavy riffs along with Steve's powerful vocals sets the tone and mood for the rest of the record."

Best known as the founding guitarist for Fates Warning, but with countless other projects under his belt - including Arch / Matheos and most recently Tuesday The Sky - Jim Matheos is incapable of stifling his creativity. In early 2021, he started working on the songs that would become Kings Of Mercia's self-titled debut album, bringing his distinct style yet doing something a little different. "I started writing without any real idea of what direction I wanted to go in or what I was going to do with the material. The first few songs came together quickly and were a bit more straightforward than I'm used to, and I really liked that idea, kind of going back to my early heavy/hard rock roots." Not having any pre-conceived ideas of what the record should or would end up sounding like, at least early on, certainly helped, "as did the fact that it's our first record, so there was nothing to measure it against or expectations to live up to, even if only in my own head."

Churning out songs, Matheos' next concern was to find the musicians who would help him realize the material, and his first priority was a vocalist. It was his friend Jeff Wagner who suggested FM's Steve Overland, and another friend, rock journalist Dave Ling, who put them in touch with each other. "Jim had asked Dave for my contact details, we talked about his idea for mixing the two styles, his heavier background, with my melodic/bluesier direction," says Overland. "We decided to try a collaboration on one song and see how it worked, we came up with the track "Humankind", and we both loved it." Having already settled on this hard rock direction, it was only once Matheos got the first couple of songs back from Overland that it became all the way clear of the shape the record would take, with the vocalist sending over his parts every few weeks, everything gradually coming together.

Behind the kit for the record is the legendary Simon Phillips (ex-Toto, Derek Sherinian), one of Matheos' favorite drummers. "I decided to contact him on a whim, not really expecting that he'd be available or interested in this project. But, to my surprise, he liked the music and was able to fit some recording into his schedule. It's an honor to share a credit with him and I couldn't be happier with what he added to the record." Rounding out the group is bassist Joey Vera - Matheos' Fates Warning bandmate - who brings his trademark style and professionalism to the table. "My old friend and co-worker Joey Vera was a natural choice for bass. Not only did I know he would deliver performance-wise, but it was nice to have a familiar face among the new personalities." With these players involved it was an easy, stress-free process throughout, making music for the love of it, and coming up with something that sounds familiar yet new, expanding the repertoire of all involved. This means songs like the half-acoustic ballad, half-swaggering "Too Far Gone" or the beautiful "Everyday Angels", and the soaring "Wrecking Ball", which opens the record on a high note, all brought to life in dynamic style.
